Chapter 1 – On their Way
to the New World
Hello! Greetings to all my dear relatives, and anyone else who may be interested in learning about the fascinating life journey of Henry Samuel Foss and Jeanne Marie Foss (née Lefant) and their 3 children- Rene Valerie and Marcelle, who on this day 112 years ago landed in Quebec, Canada to begin the next chapter in their lives. Harry arrived 2 year years later when they were settled in in Toronto.
There are many other interesting chapters that precede this one, how they met in Paris, and eventually married on July 31st, 1900, their employment in the women’s fashion industry which took them to Nice in the South of France where René was born in 1901 and then back to Paris where Valérie was born in 1903. There is plenty of information, photos and assumptions to be followed up on for that later. But I will start with this part, with what I know and have learned both from family and in doing some sleuthing and research, but I also would love to have the help of anyone who can help build out more detail on this true to life adventure.

We know that Nanny’s mother, Marie Clementine Lefant joined the family in Toronto in 1913 where they had been living since 1909. But sadly she died of Pneumonia while staying with the family in Canada on the 9th of May, 1917. My guess is that she hadn’t returned to France because WWI had broken out.
